Google maps as a metaphor for aerial theory?

Hey Reader,

Something somewhat noteworthy about me is that I didn’t learn to drive until I was in my 40s. I got my driver’s license 3 1/2 years ago! Which means the entirety of my driving career, I’ve had Google Maps.

This was very handy for me when, 3 months after getting my license, I drove across the country by myself. I lived and died by Google Maps, and Apple CarPlay was my savior.

And when I’m home, driving around the city I’ve lived in my whole life? Well, I still use Google Maps sometimes. But when Google gives me directions I don’t agree with (Why do you want me to make an uncontrolled left turn onto the highway, Google?), I know how to detour, because I know my city and I know where I’m trying to go.

This email isn’t about online navigation.

We were talking about why understanding theory is important in class the other day, and this was the analogy I used:

I can teach you a sequence, or you can watch a video or a tutorial. You follow the directions and get to the end, just like having Siri tell you “At the next stoplight, turn left.”

But what if you get stuck in traffic? What if you decide you don’t like the route you’re given? What if you want to figure out your own way to get from your house to the office?

With theory, you start to see the bigger picture, an understanding of the lay of the land. Instead of only knowing the specific route you’ve been instructed in (the sequence you learned in class), you can see the alternative routes you could take to get to the same place.

And if you get stuck? Theory can help you get out of traffic, or untangle yourself.

If you want to take the scenic route, theory helps you find the least direct way to get from one point to the next. And if you want to get on the freeway? Theory will show you the fastest way to get there, too.

I LOVE teaching theory. I love watching my students start to work things out for themselves and come up with their own stuff.

I love seeing them step into their own as aerialists!

Which is why my newest Aerial for Nerds course is all about wrap theory.

AERIAL FOR NERDS: WRAP THEORY

Wrap theory is understanding how wraps work: where they sit on the body, which direction they go, how they connect to other wraps, and how they relate to the skills you already know. Once you can see that, you’re not following directions anymore. You’re choosing your route.

Here’s what’s included:

Monthly sequence tutorials: Each month for three months, you’ll get a new sequence tutorial. I’ll break down the sequence and teach it to you step by step. I’ll also explain the theory behind the wraps, so you understand why the sequence works and not just how to do it.

3 live online classes: These are your chance to explore how movement theory and wrap theory work together in sequencing:

  • Pathway Basics
  • The Art of Transitions
  • All Things Crossback Straddle

That’s a Wrap! Parts 1 and 2: My wrap theory masterclass bundle, with over 4 hours of material that goes deep into the basics of wrap theory and explores how those concepts build into more complex wraps and skills.

3 Online Private Lessons: 3 hours with me to spend working on whatever your heart desires!

This course starts November 2nd, and I've got a couple extra offers for everyone on the waitlist!

The Early Bird discount gets you $150 off the course.

And if you sign up before 10/23, you'll also get my masterclass The Aerial Algorithm and Sequence Breakdown #2!

Not sure if it’s the right fit? Reply and tell me where you’re stuck, and I’ll tell you honestly whether this will help.

Love,

Lauren
